Central City Neighborhood Central City is situated at the lower end of Uptown on the lakeside of the Garden District. Developed since the early 19th century, it was first the home of European immigrants, and after the Civil War, many rural African Americans moved there. A predominantly African American neighborhood to this day, it is an important center of the Civil Rights Movement and of New Orleans's brass band and Mardi Gras traditions. |
