Mardi Gras Indians Mardi Gras Indians are part of New Orleans's cultural heritage. Their tradition honors Native Americans as allies of African Americans who sought freedom in times of slavery. Famous for their feathered costumes and musical activities, the tribes parade on Mardi Gras Day, on St. Joseph's Day, and during some festivals. In January 2015, Bo Dollis, the long-time Big Chief of the Wild Magnolias, passed away. At his funeral celebrations, Mardi Gras Indians attended en masse to pay tribute. |
