Confederate Monuments In the summer of 2017, the city of New Orleans removed four Confederate monuments from the cityscape—following a city council decision in 2015, court cases and, a heated public debate. The monuments had been erected long after the American Civil War and symbolized white supremacy. Due to threats, the first three were removed in the middle of the night while access was cordoned off. Only the last statue, Robert E. Lee, was taken down in broad daylight - followed by a largely supportive and cheering crowd. |
