Oretha Castle Haley Commercial Corridor Formerly Dryades Street, Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard is located in Central City. During the Civil Rights Movement, Castle was an organizer of the boycott on Dryades Street, which was a commercial center for African Americans with shops run by white merchents who would not hire African Americans. The boycott sought to initiate hiring opportunities for the African American community in the area by asking people to shop only where they could work. | Many shops closed as a result and relocated to the suburbs along with white residents. Since the 1990s, the corridor has been renewed as a space with many social and cultural enterprises, as well as restaurants, a public market, and shops. |
