Holy Cross Neighborhood A designated historic district, Holy Cross is part of the Lower Ninth Ward, a working-class community that enjoyed a homeownership rate of 60% before Hurricane Katrina struck. The Lower Ninth is separated from the city by the Industrial Canal and two drawbridges. It suffered the worst damage during Hurricane Katrina, when floodwaters broke through the levees of the Industrial Canal and the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Canal. Holy Cross is situated on the riverbanks. It barely flooded during the storm. |
