The recordings made for this two-part video installation originate from ferries that
commute between Istanbul's European and Asian districts. While one of the dual projections
shows both the distance from and approach toward the Asian part of town, the other dual
projection juxtaposes the movement toward as well as from the European section.
This work reflects upon the idea that crossing the Bosphorus means crossing the continents. However, the historic city of Istanbul, that is home to the very core of ideas about the Orient, is situated on the European side whereas modern shopping malls and other elements representing theWest are located on the Asian side of the city. In the videos, die überfahrt as a symbolic act does not take place. The viewers are watching the same continent's coasts approaching and disappearing in the distance at the same time. |
